Aucune disposition du code de la route n’impose aux automobilistes de démonter leur dispositif d’attelage voiture destiné à tracter un véhicule léger (remorque ou caravane). Celui-ci peut donc être conservé toute l’année même lorsqu’il n’est pas utilisé.
Il faut toutefois noter que l’article R.317-23 du code de la route dispose que les aménagements extérieurs d’un véhicule ne doivent pas augmenter les risques d’accidents corporels, que ce soit pour les occupants du véhicule ou pour les autres usagers de la route. Cela signifie que les propriétaires d’un équipement d’attelage voiture doivent s’assurer que leur équipement ne présente pas un danger pour les autres automobilistes, les cyclistes, les piétons, etc. Concrètement, pour répondre à cette exigence, il convient :
- de n’installer que des dispositifs homologués ;
- de remettre la protection de la boule d’attelage quand elle n’est pas utilisée.
Par ailleurs, aucun élément pointu ou tranchant ne doit dépasser.
Enfin, il est important que votre dispositif d’attelage voiture ne masque pas votre plaque d’immatriculation. Celle-ci doit être visible sans qu’aucun élément ne vienne perturber la lecture du numéro d’immatriculation de votre véhicule.

Il est conseillé de prévenir son assureur lorsqu’on installe un dispositif d’attelage auto sur sa voiture. En effet, même s’il est homologué, il peut accentuer les dégâts provoqués par une collision. Pour cette raison, certaines assurances refusent de prendre en charge les frais de réparation en estimant que cet équipement est un facteur aggravant qui engage la responsabilité de l’assuré. En informant votre assureur de l’installation de ce dispositif, vous connaîtrez sa position vis-à-vis de ce dispositif et pourrez, si cela s’avère nécessaire, opter pour une nouvelle assurance ayant une politique plus en adéquation avec vos besoins.
